Regardless, the initial step is to get a solid understanding of Storyline. So, how do we get started?

Come along with me as I walk you through your first steps with Storyline 360 in this blog post, and make it as easy as one, two, three…four, five!

Step 1: Plan Your Course

Before you dive into Storyline 360 and start crafting your masterpiece of a course, it’s important to have a solid grasp of your end goal and the path you’re going to take to get there.

This is where Instruction Design comes in. We’ll get into that in another post. Like a friendly travel guide, Instructional Design helps you map out your journey. It’s all about pinpointing those key learning objectives, getting to know your audience, diving into the depths of your topic research, sketching out your content outline, and deciding on your instructional strategy. Taking these steps will be like laying down the blueprint for your course, ensuring it’s not only relevant and effective but also perfectly aligned with what you want to achieve. You can use tools like Miro, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and others to create your course content.

Step 2: Create Your Project

Once you’ve got your course plan all set, you can dive right into creating your project in Storyline 360. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Launch Storyline 360 and click the New Project button on the start screen.
  • Choose a project size and orientation that suits your content and your learners’ devices. You can use the default settings or customize them according to your preferences.
  • Add slides to your project by using the Insert tab on the ribbon. You can insert blank slides, content slides, quiz slides, or import slides from other sources, such as PowerPoint, Content Library 360, or other Storyline projects.
  • Organize your slides into scenes by using the Story View. You can rename, reorder, group, or delete scenes and slides as needed.
  • Save your project by clicking the Save button on the Quick Access Toolbar or pressing Ctrl+S on your keyboard. You can also use the Save As option to save a copy of your project with a different name or location.

Step 3: Add Content and Interactivity

Now that you have created your project and added your slides, you can start adding content and interactivity to your course. Storyline 360 offers a variety of features and tools that allow you to:

  • Add text, images, audio, video, shapes, buttons, and other objects to your slides by using the Insert tab on the ribbon. You can also use the Format tab to customize the appearance and properties of your objects.
  • Add animations, transitions, and effects to your objects and slides by using the Animations tab on the ribbon. You can also use the Timeline panel to adjust the timing and order of your animations and transitions.
  • Add triggers, variables, and states to your objects and slides by using the Triggers panel, the Variables window, and the States panel. These features enable you to create interactivity and logic for your course, such as showing or hiding objects, jumping to different slides or scenes, changing the value or state of an object, and more.
  • Add layers to your slides by using the Slide Layers panel. Layers allow you to display additional content or feedback on top of your base layer, without creating new slides. You can also use triggers to show or hide layers based on certain conditions or actions.
  • Add quizzes and assessments to your course by using the Insert tab on the ribbon. You can choose from 25 different question types, such as multiple choice, drag and drop, matching, and more. You can also use the Form View and the Slide View to edit your questions (and answers) and use the Feedback Master and the Result Slides to customize your feedback and results.

Step 4: Preview and Test Your Course

Once you’ve filled your course with engaging content and interactive features, it’s time to take it for a spin! You want to make sure it’s working just like you imagined and meets your high-quality standards. Good news, Storyline 360 has got your back with several handy options for previewing and testing your course, like:

  • Previewing your slides, scenes, or entire project by using the Preview button on the ribbon. You can also use the Preview Options to change the device, orientation, or browser for your preview.
  • Testing your quizzes and assessments by using the Quiz Preview button on the ribbon. You can also use the Quiz Options to change the number of attempts, the passing score, the feedback, and the result slide for your quiz.
  • Publishing your project to a local folder, a web server, an LMS, or Review 360 by using the Publish button on the ribbon. You can also use the Publish Options to change the title, the description, the quality, the format, the player, and the reporting and tracking settings for your project.
  • Reviewing your project online by using the Review 360 app. You can also use the Share button on the ribbon to upload your project to Review 360 and share it with your stakeholders for feedback and collaboration.

Step 5: Update and Maintain Your Course

Once you have previewed, tested, and published your course, you may need to update and maintain it from time to time, depending on the feedback you receive, the changes in your content, or the new features and updates in Storyline 360. To update and maintain your course, you need to:

  • Open your project file in Storyline 360 and make the necessary changes to your slides, scenes, objects, triggers, variables, states, layers, quizzes, assessments, animations, transitions, effects, or any other elements of your course.
  • Save your project file and publish it again to the same or a different location or platform, depending on your needs and preferences.
  • Review your published course online or offline and make sure it works as expected and meets your quality standards.
